Patient testimonial – Katie Van Zyl

Helping a patient to get to their optimal function is something that I always want to achieve as a chiropractor. Mostly, we can return a patient to normal functionality with the correct treatment protocol for their condition/injury, but when we are talking about a partial avulsion fracture (when a portion of your tendon pulls off the bone it attaches to AND takes a small piece of the bone with it) we are dealing with a whole different kettle of fish. Now make that patient an avid runner (determined, stubborn, hardy, selective hearing… not only Katie but runners in general are die-hard fans of their sport) and you’ve got a massive mountain to climb in their recovery. It takes a team of people to get there, lots of patience and bucket loads of reassurance. We are often impatient when treating a condition and want results faster than they are possible. This includes myself as the medical professional, I can’t wait to have my patients back to full functionality. This testimonial is a reminder that although the body is an amazing thing, it takes time to mend. We just give it the right stuff to heal as fast and with as much quality as possible.

“Recovering from a pubic avulsion fracture...

After experiencing the most painful and debilitating injury ever, I thought my running career was over before it had even truly begun. In came Dr Kelsi to walk a long journey with me. Over and above the treatment of the affected muscles and ligaments, targeting repair and rehabilitation, Dr Kelsi then worked with me to get me very slowly back to exercise. After 6 weeks of not being able to do anything, hearing the words "you may aqua jog" was like music to the ears (and nobody ever gets excited about aqua jogging). Slowly we moved forward to walking, run-walking on grass and finally short runs back on the road. My patience was tried and tested but under Dr Kelsi’s guidance and even emotional support we slowly started building and progressing. Her support went even further as she worked with my running coach and a biokineticist to ensure the injury was correctly treated but also didn't reoccur. She worked through video recordings and gait analysis reports, to understand my biomechanics better and guided me back to running and also cross-training with low-impact indoor training rides, strength & conditioning and most importantly stretching pre- and post- running. The odd niggle pops up now and then but I am a stronger and better athlete than before. I completed 7 half marathons in the first 6 months of 2024, an achievement that would not have been possible without Dr Kelsi.”
